I was commissioned by Celtic Connections festival - see
www.celticconnections.co.uk as one of 2004's New Voices to write an hour
long piece of music of completely new material. It was performed in the
Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on February 1st and featured the sound of voice,
fiddle, piano, cello, percussion, oboe, clarsach and guitar. The musicians
involved were James Mackintosh, Karine Polwart, Kevin Henderson, James Ross,
Christine Hanson and myself.
I decided to compose 'Silver Lining' about my experiences of growing up in
Sutherland. I have very strong emotions with regards to my homeland and
display this in my writing. My music tells of the unfortunate decline in
employment resulting in low morale and the movement of many young people to
the cities, in search of work or further education. Thankfully, now there
has been investment made and employment is once again on the increase. The
piece is a moving and exciting mixture of music and song.
I hope to have 'Silver Lining' recorded and released as an album along with
a tour of Scotland.
